Sami Warp Weighted Loom
We were introduced to the Sami way of weaving through Kay Larsen who commissioned
us to build Sami looms for a workshop at the Nordic Heritage Museum in
Seattle. Although traditional looms are built from found limbs, Kay wanted
a refined example that students could assemble themselves.
A 60" weaving width was chosen with 2 harness shedding mechanism.
We also developed a 4 harness option. Warps are tensioned by hanging rocks
from warp bouts and weaving proceeds from top to bottom. For a complete
description of warp weighted weaving, see Warp Weighted Loom
by Marta Hoffman, published by Robin & Russ. Looms are made of Douglas
fir. Prices: 2 Harness $445 4 harness conversion $125. |
