Traditional Tapestry Loom

There are basic qualities in tapestry weavers which communicate a sensibility about life. By their nature, they are patient and unique. We've tried to capture this sensibility, this awareness in our high warp loom.

Draw bored mortise and tenon joints serve a double function-very handsome, very strong, but also extremely practical. You can disassemble the entire frame in 15 minutes. Each loom is also truly unique. It is dated and numbered and, like the tapestries for which it is intended, is one of a kind.

This loom loves tension. Counterbalanced harnesses, double gears, worm drive, cantilevered rear mounted treadles and solid roller beams are all designed for high tension weaving.

A floating beater bar with interchangeable reeds moves vertically, sliding on hardwood rails. The result is a heavy beat, straight down rather than an angle. A counterbalanced weight compensates for gravity, producing a weightless feel in your hand. The reed also serves as an excellent warp spacer if you do not want to weave selvedge to selvedge. One 12 dent reed is included with your loom, other sizes are available.

Solid 4 1/2" roller beams allow for practically unlimited warp length and high tension. Both warp and cloth beams have an apron to provide a perfectly smooth surface for your work. Ratchets with pawls are mounted on both ends of the warp beam and are simultaneously released from the front of the loom. The worm gear tensioning system gives you a 60: 1 mechanical advantage for infinite control forward or backward and has a free spool mode for winding off.

The two harnesses are counterbalanced. Enough twelve inch Texsolv heddles are included to weave 12 ends per inch. The frames and reed can be removed easily for threading comfortably at a table. A cartoon holder can be added behind the beater to display your design.

Treadle pairs are tied up with unstretchable chain, keeping both hands free for weaving. Pairs of treadles are located across the width of the loom, so there will always be a set in reach. An optional stop block, located between each pair, locks the shed open.

Finally, if you want your tools in front of you, choose the accessory rail spanning from castle to castle at elbow height, to keep nippers, butterflies and bobbins handy.

Tech Style Split Harness Tapestry Loom

The Tech Style loom is designed for tapestry weavers who want versatility from their loom. At the heart of this design are unique split harnesses. Harnesses are divided into 2, 3, or 4 panels, each panel operated by its own set of treadles.  Each panel can be easily interlocked with its neighbor and operated as a combined unit.

This allows several weavers to work simultaneously on the same piece or on separate pieces side by side. It reduces stress on warp and weaver to only open the shed in one's work range.

Due to the unique harness drivers, the shedding operation is quiet and has extremely easy action. Harness panels are pulled from connections at all four corners to ensure smooth parallel movement. Thin metal guides provide stability without deflecting warp ends.

The Tech Style loom is a gentle giant designed to last:  huge roller beams, laminated frame, parallel gears, counterweighted beater and 100:1 worm drive ensure its reliability for years to come.

Tapestry Loom Benches

Traditional Tapestry Scooter Bench

Scooter benches run the entire length of the loom. It features a 12" wide surface and a storage tray beneath the seat. The standard height is 20 1/2" but can be made any height you request.

Traditional Tapestry Commuter Bench

The Commuter bench is similar to the Scooter with the addition of a commuter seat mounted on ball bearing wheels encased within nylon sleeves, which quietly roll on a laid in steel rail. Quiet and efficient, it takes you to whatever portion of the tapestry on which you wish to work.

Weaver's Back Seat

The Back Seat supports your lumbar curve while you're weaving and allows you to relax without leaving the loom. Its slatted construction breathes and is wonderfully springy too! Attach the Back Seat to either the Classic bench (shown here) or the Traditional tapestry bench. It will fit most other loom benches without any modification by attaching with two bolts. So slip off your shoes and ease into the Back Seat. Your back will love you for it.
