We are supporting OSLOOM project

Posted by fireside. 2 Comments

Jacquard Looms are fascinating! Imagine the infinite design possibilities of weaving when you control each individual thread, of course with computer help. Margarita Benitez’s goal is to create loom building plans so individual weavers or fine arts schools can build their own such loom for much less than the $35,000 that a commercially-sold jacquard loom now costs. This ambitious undertaking helps bring this style of weaving into affordability for many more weavers…opening yet another path for people to express their creativity through weaving.

While we do not anticipate ever adding computer-capability to Fireside Looms, we do appreciate the contribution that computer-controlled looms make to the creativity and art of weaving. Please join us in supporting Margarita’s project by pledging your donation at Kickstarter by May 2nd. If she does not obtain pledges to complete her funding by May 2nd, she will receive none of the pledges made to date…with 77% of her funding now pledged and only 56 hours to go, she needs everyone’s support. You can donate any amount $1-$1,000…so consider even a small donation to support this project.

We see many Fireside Loom owners in the list of donors so far…THANKS!  We are proud to be part of a weaving community that supports both tradition and new technology in the world of weaving tools!

Convergence? not this year

Posted by fireside. No Comments

We were in Tampa Bay in June 2008…and very excited to be exhibiting at our FIRST Convergence.  Sure, Fireside Looms were there for many prior years but our adventure with Fireside Looms began in 2007 when the original owners retired, so it was our first experience at an HGA Convergence.  We were overwhelmed with the  warm welcome we received from fellow vendors and most of all from the Fireside Loom owners who stopped by our booth to introduce themselves.  Here we are thrilled to have a beautiful 10-harness, 60″ maple loom in our booth colorfully warped to make blankets.  The loom was bound for Wisconsin when we returned home.

Lesniak Family @ Convergence 2008

Looking at the picture all four of us have changed, especially with the growth spurts and maturity gained by our sons during the past 2 years.  But the picture tells the heart of our Fireside story…it’s a family business that needs all 4 of us.  Even as very young teens, our sons were active decision-makers when we decided to pursue our “own” business – it would affect them immensely and we needed their help, cooperation and support.  So our approach to the loom business needed to reflect who we are.

After attending a couple of shows in 2008, it was time to schedule for 2009.  Reviewing our calendar revealed that our open weekends did not match any show dates.  Why?  Our sons’ involvement in school and community activities kept us busy…already juggling multiple events each weekend, shows just didn’t fit.  In our business plan, we expected this…but now it was truly a reality.  We admired Gary and Rachel (original owners of Fireside) for their cross-country trips lasting months at a time to visit conferences, sheep and wools, and guilds across the US, but for now we could not do the same.

We needed to rely on our website, the good word of mouth by Fireside Loom Owners (aloomni) and brief guild presentations to remain present in the Weaving Community.  And when the time is right, travel to spend weekends among the awesome weavers and fiber artists around the world.

We had hoped that Convergence 2010 in Albuquerque New Mexico would be our next stop…NOT this year.  Both our sons, Ben and Kevin, have the honor of attending the National Boy Scout Jamboree in AP Hill Virginia from July 25 to August 4, celebrating 100 years of Scouting in the US.  Notice the dates…yes they overlap with Convergence and without a way to be in both the Southwest and Northeast US on Sunday, July 25 – we were forced to choose.  Family comes first!

We will miss seeing many of you at Convergence, but please remember that we remain committed to building custom looms and weaving accessories.  Our strength is our ability to work across phone lines, internet connections and with the cooperation of Fireside Loom owners all over the US to continue supporting existing Fireside Looms, giving you the opportunity to see a Fireside Loom in person and keeping the tradition of handmade custom looms alive in our workshop.

Guatemala for my summer trip

Posted by fireside. 2 Comments

I’m SO excited!  On June 17th I will join 4 others as I fly to Guatemala City, Guatemala on a church mission trip to Patzun, Guatemala.  We will be assisting the San Bernardino School with school maintenance and meeting the school children PLUS we will kickoff our Clean Water Project.  Our water filter demo and talk at church this month touched the hearts of many parishioners, and they gave generously so we can help provide clean, safe water for the school childern and their families.  Improving the daily lives of the Patzun children with our Clean Water Project really touches my heart.

Since I do not speak Spanish, my supportive husband bought me software to help me…we will see what I can learn in the next couple of months.   Does anyone have any tips for quickly learning Spanish?  Primarily conversational, I doubt I will have to write much!

As I was deciding whether to travel to Guatemala, I was shocked that two weaving publications highlighted the weaving in Guatemala.  First, Handwoven Weaving Weekly on December 16, 2009 focused on fair trade mentioning Ten Thousand Villages, the organization our Mission Team was using on that day to hold our first Fair Trade Market…what a coincidence!  But best of all they highlighted a book by Debbie Chandler and Raymond E Senuk titled “Guatemalan Woven Wealth” – of course I found it wrapped under the Christmas tree.  The details in the weaving are intricate and beautiful – I cannot wait to see work like this in person!

Then Syne of Weavezine published an article in January about TRAMA Textiles, a 400 member association of Mayan weavers who join together to offer their beautiful weaving for sale to help support their families.  Check out the Weavezine article here  They are located in the Western highlands of Guatemala in the same department (state) where I will be.  I hope to be able to visit their store.  They are looking for more International Partners and perhaps Fireside Fiberats will become a US distributor!?

Exploring Guatemala for one week will not be enough but I am sure to come back with thousands of pictures to share.
